Multiple prizes for contests

Multiple prizes should be able to be awarded for contests.

  1. I don't see the point of this one as the host can always pick more then one winner right now just only one will have the chance to have the design on the portfolio style set up.

  2. i don't understand? i thought CH's could already do this. can you elaborate?

  3. Currently contest holders can only award a single prize through the system.

  4. many contest holders would like to award more than one prize, I've seen it in many contests. maybe if there are 2 prizes allocated, then both should go into the designers' porfolio (not just the 1st winner).

  5. True, though lately i haven't seen so many willing CH to award more than one entry.

  6. I really would love to award multiple prizes in my upcoming (guarunteed) contest. What I would like to do is $150 Grand Prize, $50 Second Place, and $10 for the next 5 runners up... I just feel bad when a designer invests a lot of time and has nothing to show for it... is this something that would interest designers?

  7. Multiple prizes is indeed a nice attraction. My question would be does the designer relinquish the rights to the design or is this more of a consolation prize?

  8. True, the ammount is too low to give away the full rights.

  9. I mean, hopefuly the cntest holders would understand that awarding 1 or two runner ups for a lower price does not mean that the designers must accept to give away their rights.

  10. Yeah, it's kind of a hard balance finding where you are offering someone decent In terms of prizes for rights. I think a lot of designers hate getting nothing for an hours work, but at some point it becomes a ripoff.

I think consolation prizes might encourage more entries no matter what -- and help give bragging rights. Still as a buyer, I want to buy rights, not throw away money.

  11. we as designers still have the chance to withdraw our designs from the contest. or we should have the choice to do so when being awarded the runner-up prize. this way we have the chance to re-use the concept in another contest etc and the CH can select another runner-up who then might be willing to give away the rights for a lower payment - after all some money is better than no money for many ppl

  12. Very true. Do designers really get opportunities to reuse concepts though? Wondering because some things are fairly specific, and the looks and feels vary a lot.

  13. Also as a comment, it does say multiple prizes can be awarded in the launch a contest tab, but it never offers the opportunity to do this. I wanted to do it but could not.

  14. others can back this up, but i reuse concepts all the time. it's totally ok. But, what abo some sort of "credits" system where the winner of a contest gets paid and everything's normal with that, but then the designers or even the contest holder for that matter could vote on the design they think is the next best and award that person with some sort of credit......understand this is just a thought

  15. Multiple prizes would always be for the full amount. "Consolation prizes" sounds good, but it's too confusing to convey to contest holders that they don't get the rights to the design in exchange for a lesser amount of money. I am a big believer that if a designer enters a contest expecting a certain prize they shouldn't give up that design for less than that expected price.

  16. I sort of disagree with that -- some entries are nice, good, and well-worth consideration but not worth the full prize to the buyer (or else the buyer would have picked their entry) -- I think the prize should be less, but should also be presented as an option to the designer rather than automatic. TBH, the idea just seems a bit difficult and unworkable now that we discuss it.

  17. Indeed it does, which is why we haven't implemented it yet. I would certainly love to come up with a way to that was clear to everyone involved. Maybe even just the ability to award a second and third place without a cash prize? Or possibly a way to "tip" designers?

  18. that's what i'm trying to say. a credits system of some sort.

  19. This is a great idea for generous CH's!

  20. I have this case too... a CH wanted more than just one winner. I already got the price but the problem is that, the design didn't appear to my won entries. too bad for my portfolio.

  21. A way to tip designers would be great. In my current contest, the level of eligible entries is so high, I'd love to be able to tip multiple entrants or give them some type of "2nd place/3rd place" monetary prize. They keep full rights to their entries; I would like to reward them for the obvious hard work and thought they put into the contest. The winner would still be paid the full amount.

  22. yes, if the designer agrees, and if the amount is favorable....I don't think designer should have to give files/right to work though

  23. If they want to it is entirely up to the contest holder. They are already paying for a design. Why pay two people? ( unless they have a use for it)

  24. Maybe the CH could choose a 2nd and 3rd favourite design which would feature on the designers profile page. That way the designers are getting some recognition for their design.
There isn't much point for the CH to pay for something they're not going to use, it might put them off launching contests.

  25. I like Tigratho's idea,

our portfolio might as well include a 2nd and 3rd section, that way when contest holders view the portfolio they know what kind of quality work we can create. I know many designers who produce quality work, but they don't get so many wins.

  26. i would like to reward a couple of designers - the work is really outstanding and i can't decide between them. i think this is a great idea!

  27. I hosted a contest in January and selected two winning designs, paying each one the full prize award. In effect, two first prize winners. Only one could be the official winner. This is unfair to the designer who was not registered as the official winner, and their winning design did not show up in the their account. This option may be used in a minority of contests, but should be an option.

  28. I think there should be the option to have multiple 1st prizes (where the prize is the same for every winner) as this would not pose difficulties as to whether a winner would accept the prize amount or not....I've just been involved in a contest of this sort. The CH wanted to award $20 per winner and was hoping to chose at least 10 winners.

  29. Sorry, the CH was hoping to *choose* at least 10 winners.

  30. I would go one further and say that if a designer has come up with a design that someone else has used and then won, the person that came up with the initial idea should receive some compensation.

  31. I think having a 2nd and 3rd place mainly as a "rating system" but only the first place winner gets that prize money. In some contests, it would be nice if the designers knew JUST HOW CLOSE they were to winning- might push them into designing for more contests...you know? It might work as an influence thing to encourage designers to keep working...just a thought...

  32. We would love to be able to award more than one winner. Two - three runner-ups would be ideal. Having 99Designs make it official would also allow the designers to count it as a "win" then for their profile. Now, the main winner gets recognition, but the runners up get nothing but cash.

  33. More would be nice...

  34. I have had 4 different contests just recently that have wanted to purchase my design after picking a "winner". They've said they try to go back & select a second design but can't. I do think there needs to be guidelines by 99designs as to how much a second prize is "worth" so that the designer doesn't get completely ripped off when the CH decides they want more than one design though.
